New-Home Sales Fall, Prices Increase

Sales of new single-family homes fell 12.6 percent in January to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 284,000 from December when sales were 325,000, according to the latest figures released by the U.S. Commerce Department. New-home sales for the month were also 18.6 percent below the 349,000 estimated a year ago.

The median sale price of a new home sold in January was $230,600, up 5.4 percent from a year ago when the median was $218,200. There were 188,000 new homes available for sale at the end of January, representing a supply of 7.9 months at the current sales rate.
